Dexter Morgan made his return to television today with the premiere episode of Dexter: Original Sin, and while the prequel series will give fans a look at the early years of their favorite serial killer, the fun isn’t going to stop there. Next year we’ll be treated to Dexter: Resurrection, which will feature the return of Michael C. Hall in full force as he picks up where things left off at the end of New Blood in 2022. Now, thanks to creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips, we know exactly when Resurrection begins filming, and when it will release.

At the beginning of Dexter: Original Sin, we see Michael C. Hall rushed into a hospital after being left for dead at the end of New Blood due to a gunshot wound suffered at the hands of his son, Harrison. He’s miraculously brought back to life after having his heart shocked with a defibrillator, and from there the series begins to examine his early years with his father as he hones his bloody craft. This, of course, explains how he’s able to return for Dexter: Resurrection, which Phillips says will begin filming in January for a June 2025 release (courtesy of Discussing Film, seen below).

By showing him opening the show, it will allow us to move on to Resurrection when that time comes. We start shooting Resurrection in the first week of January, and it airs in June 2025.

‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Reveals How the Beloved Serial Killer Is Still Alive

Dexter is finally back, and off to a great start!

As of now, little is known about Dexter: Resurrection in terms of its plot, so we’re not entirely sure which direction the series is going to take. With Morgan’s secret out in the open for the whole world to see, it’s going to be hard for him to conduct his business in the shadows like he’s been used to. Plus, there’s that whole pesky business of him being caught and in police custody, so how are they going to get through that? We’ll have to wait until June to find out.

‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Makes Old Things New Again

As with any prequel series, the danger is always there of relying too much on the past while failing to deliver anything new. Such is not the case with Dexter: Original Sin, as thus far the series has managed to make old things fresh again by adding extra layers to Dexter’s story.

While we always knew that he was trained by his father in the ways of the code, the prequel gives us a deeper look at how it all came to be, and expands upon the father-son relationship that we saw in the original series. If you’ll recall, in the third episode of Dexter Season 1, “Popping Cherry,” a flashback revealed that his first kill was a nurse poisoning patients in the hospital, including Harry, who had suffered a heart attack. In the first episode of Original Sin, “And in the Beginning…” we get the full story, which expands upon the lore already established while at the same time giving us a fresh perspective on things.

All of that coupled with new actors portraying some of our favorite characters has thus far made for a great start to what promises to be a thrilling chapter in the story of the vigilante serial killer. Be sure to check out the first episode of Dexter: Original Sin streaming now on Paramount+ with Showtime, and catch new episodes every Friday.
